Malaysia is poised to enact crucial reforms aimed at enhancing governance and combating corruption, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim declared in a speech to civil servants on Monday. This initiative is part of the government's consistent effort to boost transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the political and legal framework.

A key proposal from Anwar is a parliamentary bill to instate a maximum tenure of 10 years for prime ministers. This commitment aligns with Anwar's coalition's promises made during the 2022 general election. In addressing civil servants, Anwar emphasized the necessity for leadership renewal, stating, "Everyone has a term limit. If given enough time to deliver, it is better to hand over to the next generation." This move seeks to avert the monopolization of power and invite innovative leadership within the government.

Beyond the term limit, the government plans to suggest reform that divides the roles of the attorney-general. Presently, the attorney-general functions as both the government's chief legal counsel and the leader of public prosecutions. Critics have long contended that this dual function can result in political intrusion into judicial processes. By segregating these roles, the government aims to bolster judicial independence and ensure fair prosecution devoid of political interference.

Additional reforms outlined by Anwar incorporate an ombudsman law, granting the public a formal avenue to voice governance concerns and administrative complaints. This law will empower citizens to hold government entities accountable and ensure grievances are addressed promptly and transparently. Moreover, a proposed freedom of information law aims to enhance governmental transparency, curbing corruption and misuse of power in public initiatives.

Anwar Ibrahim, who took office in 2022 with a pledge to combat corruption, recognizes that systemic graft poses a significant challenge in Malaysia. However, he reassured that his administration is dedicated to tackling these issues and elevating governance standards throughout the nation. "We are committed to enhancing transparency, eradicating corruption, and forging a government that effectively serves the populace," Anwar stated.

These initiatives are expected to signify a pivotal advancement in Malaysia's ongoing mission to reform its political and legal institutions, fostering a culture of accountability and strengthening public trust in the government’s capability to govern effectively.
