Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), recently attended the closing ceremony of the first-ever Dubai Sculpture Symposium. This special event, held in the historic Al Shindagha District, was part of the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033. It was designed to showcase the power of sculpture as an art form, highlighting how it can enhance Dubai’s visual identity and blend art seamlessly into everyday public life. The symposium brought together talented artists from various cultures and nationalities, encouraging them to connect with local talent and share their experiences. The goal was to promote creative industries and further strengthen Dubai’s reputation as a global hub for creativity and innovation.

Her Highness expressed pride in Dubai’s progress under the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. She described the symposium as a reflection of Dubai’s ambition to transform itself into a citywide art gallery, featuring inspiring works that capture the city’s vibrant spirit and unique identity.

Sheikha Latifa emphasized the importance of art as a universal language that fosters understanding and communication between societies. She highlighted sculpture as a powerful visual art form capable of expressing beauty and creativity timelessly. She noted that sculptures do more than enhance the artistic value of Dubai; they also transform neighbourhoods, squares, and public spaces into cultural and tourist landmarks, creating lively and engaging environments for people to enjoy.
The symposium aligned with Dubai’s Public Art Strategy, which aims to innovate and elevate cultural tourism. Her Highness said events like this underscore Dubai’s growing potential in the art sector and enhance its global presence. She also pointed out how the symposium established a strong platform for sculptors in the UAE, enabling them to showcase their works and inspire future generations.

During the event, Sheikha Latifa met with 15 sculptors from the UAE and around the world. She commended their exceptional creativity and the unique stories told through their works. The event featured artworks curated by Jordanian artist Kamal Al Zoubi and Omani artist Dr. Ali Al Jabri, each exploring diverse themes and narratives. Emirati artist Dr. Mohammed Yousif presented “Shells,” which captured Dubai’s natural beauty and cultural essence. Another Emirati artist, Azza Al Qubaisi, showcased “Dubai Heart,” a dynamic sculpture representing the UAE’s rapid development. Syrian artist Aktham Abdul Hamid created “Cultural Accumulation,” a piece reflecting humanity’s journey from history to Artificial Intelligence. Chinese artist Liu Yang displayed “Starry Sky in Dubai,” which creatively depicted Dubai’s night skies.

Other remarkable works included Tunisian artist Mohamed Bouaziz’s “Our Land,” inspired by the interconnectedness of life, and Italian artist Stefano Sabetta’s “Flowing Coral,” which combined elements of coral reefs, neural networks, and genetic codes. Ukrainian artist Lyudmyla Mysko contributed a series titled “Magnetic Designer,” blending physical structure with spatial dynamics. Spanish artist José Millán’s “Harmonic Connections” celebrated human relationships, while Egyptian artist Said Badr’s “City Gate” symbolised a bridge connecting past, present, and future. Tunisian artist Mohamed Sahnoun’s “Moon,” crafted from Omani marble and influenced by Arabic calligraphy, highlighted Arab-Islamic cultural identity.

The Dubai Sculpture Symposium 2024 was organised by the Al Jalila Cultural Centre for Children in partnership with Al Shindagha Museum, Sikka Platform, Dubai Municipality, Dubai Police, Dubai Ambulance, Dubai Civil Defence, Dubai Customs, and the International Centre for Culinary Arts Dubai. Through this initiative, Dubai continues to position itself as a hub for creativity, showcasing the transformative power of art and celebrating cultural diversity on a global scale.
