Kyrgios Claims First Victory in Over Two Years, Ending Winless Streak

Nick Kyrgios made a strong comeback at the Miami Open on Wednesday, winning his first match in over two years. The Australian player defeated Mackenzie McDonald from the United States with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. This was Kyrgios' first win since October 2022, ending his long losing streak.

After hitting the final shot, Kyrgios looked up at the sky and took a deep breath, clearly feeling emotional. It was a big moment for the 29-year-old, who had been struggling with injuries. Earlier this month, he had to quit his Indian Wells match due to pain in his right wrist, which had been operated on.

Speaking to Tennis TV, Kyrgios shared how much the win meant to him:
“It’s been a long road just to start matches without being scared that I might not be able to finish them,” he said.
“So, to come in, get a win, and feel like I belong again, it’s very special.”

The match did not start well for Kyrgios. On a hot and sweaty day in Florida, he lost the first set as McDonald played with more control. But Kyrgios found his form in the second set, serving strongly and winning more points.

In the final set, with the score at 3-3, Kyrgios played a clever drop shot that helped him break McDonald’s serve. McDonald then double-faulted, giving Kyrgios a 4-3 lead. From there, Kyrgios used his powerful serve to finish the match.

The win was special for Kyrgios, who had spent the last two years recovering from knee, foot, and wrist injuries. After the 2022 US Open, where he lost a close quarter-final to Karen Khachanov, Kyrgios was seen as a top player. But his injuries forced him to step away from the sport for a long time.

Now, Kyrgios will face Karen Khachanov again in the second round, making it a rematch of their US Open battle.

Other players also did well on Wednesday at the Miami Open. Gael Monfils from France, David Goffin from Belgium, and Alexander Bublik, a Kazakhstani player, all won their first-round matches.

For Kyrgios, this victory was more than just a win. It was a fresh start, showing that he can still compete at a high level after his long fight with injuries.
