The International Photography Festival 2025 is bringing together over 300 world-famous photographers and filmmakers in Aljada, Sharjah. This exciting event, which runs until February 26, is a celebration of creativity, innovation, and storytelling through visuals.

At the heart of the festival are powerful discussions about how technology is changing storytelling. Experts from Hollywood and the world of photography shared their thoughts on artificial intelligence (AI), virtual production, and the rise of digital content. While some see these advancements as groundbreaking, others warn of the risks involved.

Breaking Barriers: Technology Making Storytelling Easier

In the past, creating high-quality films and photography required expensive equipment, funding, and industry connections. Now, thanks to AI and advanced software tools, more people can tell their stories. Director Siraj Jhaveri spoke about this shift:

“Before, you needed a big budget and expensive cameras to make a film. Today, with tools like Unreal Engine and AI, anyone with a vision can create and share their story.”

Arthur Baum, an Unreal Engine artist, agreed, saying:

“As an artist, I feel reborn. There are no more limits to the stories I want to tell. I can do everything from my living room.”

The Debate Over AI in Storytelling

AI is changing the way stories are created, but it also raises serious ethical questions. Some fear it could mislead audiences and reduce the importance of human creativity. Award-winning photographer Santiago Lyon expressed his concerns:

“AI-generated content should be clearly labeled—just like genetically modified food. If we don’t tell people what is real and what is AI-made, we could mislead audiences and lose their trust.”

Yohan Wadia, a creative expert, sees the benefits of AI:

“AI is not just about working faster; it also makes storytelling more accessible. I can now pitch ideas with visuals that are 60% ready before production even begins.”

However, Hollywood professionals remain cautious. Oscar-winning filmmaker Travon Free warned against relying too much on technology:

“Skipping the basics of storytelling and jumping straight into AI tools is risky. If you don’t understand how to tell a great story, all you’ll create is empty, soulless content.”

Hollywood’s Growing Interest in the Middle East

Hollywood has started recognizing the Middle East as an important place for filmmaking. Glenn Gainor, a producer at Amazon Originals, shared his experience:

“The first Hollywood film I brought to the UAE was Deliver Us from Evil. Back then, hardly anyone knew about the 30% tax credit for filmmakers here. Now, big movies like Star Wars: The Force Awakens have filmed in this region.”

Travon Free also spoke about the untapped potential of stories from the Middle East:

“People here have so many amazing stories that the world hasn’t heard yet. The demand for these stories is growing, and it’s exciting to see that change.”

The Rise of Streaming and Digital Platforms

Streaming platforms have completely changed how films are made and watched. Glenn Gainor explained how different genres have adapted:

“Romantic comedies, for example, are still popular, but instead of movie theaters, they are now huge hits on Netflix and Amazon Prime.”

Travon Free pointed out how YouTube is now a major competitor to traditional streaming platforms:

“YouTube is the most-watched platform on TV screens today. It’s not just for short videos any more—some of the best storytelling is happening there.”

The Future of Film: Balancing Tech and Storytelling

Even though AI and new technologies are making filmmaking easier, experts warn against losing the essence of storytelling. Travon Free explained:

“You can’t just rely on fancy effects. If you forget the basics of storytelling, your film won’t connect with the audience.”

Siraj Jhaveri agreed:

“A great film makes you feel something. It’s not about how cool it looks—it’s about the emotions it brings out in people.”

One of the most powerful examples discussed at the festival was an Oscar-nominated documentary that used only real-life footage from body cameras and surveillance videos. Glenn Gainor shared his thoughts on this film:

“It had no script, no staged shots—just raw, real moments. But it was one of the most moving stories I’ve ever seen. Technology doesn’t replace storytelling—it just helps bring stories to life.”

A Celebration of Visual Storytelling

As Xposure 2025 continues, the festival remains a hub for photographers, filmmakers, and artists who are shaping the future of storytelling. With over 300 world-renowned photographers exhibiting their work and leading workshops, the event is a powerful reminder of how stories—whether told through a camera lens or an AI-generated world—will always have the power to inspire and connect people.
