The Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC) is giving this treatment with the help of the Health Department and a company called Vertex Pharmaceuticals. This new treatment gives hope to sick people and also shows that Abu Dhabi is good at using new medical ideas. The first patient will get this treatment at Yas Clinic Hospital in April.
This treatment works by changing tiny parts of a person’s blood cells. Doctors take some of the patient’s cells and fix them in a lab. After fixing, the cells are put back into the patient’s body. This is a one-time treatment but can help for a long time.
The Health Department has made rules to make sure this treatment is safe. It also said that health insurance will cover the cost, so patients can afford it.
Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, a top official in the Health Department, said that Abu Dhabi always works to improve healthcare. She said that using new science like gene editing will help solve difficult health problems.
Dr. Maysoon Al Karam, a senior doctor at ADSCC and Yas Clinic, said that working with Vertex Pharmaceuticals is a big step. She said this treatment will change the lives of people with sickle cell disease and thalassemia. She also said that Abu Dhabi wants to be a leader in medical research.
Hisham Hagar, a manager at Vertex GCC, said he is happy that this treatment is now in the UAE. He said it is a big step in helping people who have serious blood diseases.
The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE), which looks after medicine rules in the UAE, has approved this treatment for people who are 12 years or older. It is for patients who have sickle cell disease with repeated pain or who need regular blood transfusions because of thalassemia.
This new treatment is a big change for medicine in the UAE. It gives new hope to sick people. It also helps Abu Dhabi become a top place for medical care and research.
