Dubai was recently the backdrop for an inspiring final session at the World Sports Summit, featuring six legendary football figures who have proudly raised the FIFA World Cup trophy. These icons convened to recount their experiences with their national teams and the principles that led to their achievements.
The panel included Didier Deschamps from France, Brazil’s Cafu and Ronaldo, Italy's Fabio Cannavaro, and Spain’s Carles Puyol and Andres Iniesta, expertly moderated by Italian star Alessandro Del Piero. Collectively, these legends boast incredible statistics, including 810 international caps, a total of 10 World Cup titles, 10 UEFA Champions League victories, 35 domestic championships, and five Golden Boot accolades.
They underscored that winning the World Cup is just the beginning and is the outcome of relentless dedication, sacrifice, and timeless human virtues like leadership, sportsmanship, and cooperation.
Didier Deschamps, who tasted victory as both a player in 1998 and a coach in 2018, expressed that the joy of holding the trophy is consistent regardless of one's role. He noted the importance of teamwork, describing France's 1998 win against Brazil as a dream-come-true, while coaching demanded meticulous attention to every aspect of the game.
Cafu, captain of Brazil’s victorious 2002 side, portrayed football as an essential aspect of life in Brazil. He attributed their success to the team's strong camaraderie and strategic clarity, fostering confidence in facing any opponent, in stark contrast to Brazil's 1998 performance.
Ronaldo, who staged a remarkable return after a severe injury prior to the 2002 tournament, shared how determination and grit propelled his comeback. His impressive tally of eight goals showcased his resilience and was instrumental in Brazil’s title reclaim.
Fabio Cannavaro reflected on Italy's triumph in 2006, asserting that success stemmed from a collective team effort rather than the nation’s renowned defense, complemented by a coach who motivated excellence. He expressed optimism that a renewed commitment would restore Italy’s World Cup ambitions.
Carles Puyol emphasized the synergy forged between players from rival clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona as pivotal to Spain’s 2010 World Cup success, showcasing team spirit and collaboration. Andres Iniesta reminisced about being the scorer of the decisive goal in the 2010 final, a moment he cherishes deeply even after 15 years.
This extraordinary congregation of champions reminded fans across the globe that every trophy is underpinned by commitment, unity, and respect – ideals that inspire future generations both on and off the field.
