Finnair has announced an order for 18 Embraer E195-E2 narrow-body aircraft, marking its largest investment in over 20 years and a shift from its long-time supplier Airbus.
The Finnish flag carrier said the move strengthens its European operations while supporting its climate goals. The E195-E2 jets are quieter and reduce CO2 emissions by 30% per passenger. The first three aircraft are expected to be delivered in 2027.
Finnair also plans to acquire up to 12 used Airbus A320 or A321 aircraft to complement its fleet. The Embraer order includes options for 16 additional jets and purchase rights for 12 more. Finnair has also signed agreements with Pratt & Whitney and RTX for spare engines and maintenance services.
Embraer, focused on regional aircraft below 150 seats, has seen strong demand as airlines update their fleets after pandemic delays. “We look forward to helping Finnair modernize its short-haul fleet, reduce emissions, and unlock growth,” said Embraer CEO Arjan Meijer.
Airbus, which lost out on the order, said Finnair remains a valued partner and continues to operate its Airbus A320, A330, and A350 families.
The 18 new Embraer jets will double Finnair’s seat capacity on regional routes within Finland, the Nordic countries, and Northern Europe. Finnair CEO Turkka Kuusisto cited the E195-E2’s 134-seat capacity as ideal for its operations.
The total investment for Finnair’s fleet renewal through 2029 is estimated at around €2 billion ($2.31 billion).
