Ex-NY Governor David Paterson and Stepsom Attacked in NYC; Two Teens Charged

Two teenagers have been charged in connection with an attack on former New York Governor David Paterson and his stepson, Anthony Chester Sliwa, near their Upper East Side home. The juveniles reportedly turned themselves in to police on the evening of October 5, just hours after the incident, accompanied by their parents. The attack occurred on October 4.

The suspects face second-degree assault charges, according to reports from the New York Post. A third teenager was interviewed by police but was not charged, as he did not participate in the attack.

The New York City Police Department responded to the scene at approximately 8:30 PM ET, where they found Sliwa, 20, with facial injuries and Paterson, 70, with head injuries. The specifics of how they were injured remain unclear, and the police have indicated that they are seeking at least five additional individuals involved in the incident.

Sean Darcy, a spokesperson for Paterson, revealed that the attack was carried out by individuals who had a prior interaction with Sliwa. “They both suffered some injuries but were able to fight off their attackers,” Darcy noted.

Following the assault, both Paterson and Sliwa were treated at Weill Cornell Medical Center and later released. Darcy emphasized Paterson's desire for the incident not to be exploited for personal or political gain, adding, “He and his wife, Mary, are thankful for the quick response time from the police and the outpouring of support they have received from people across all spectrums.”

Paterson, who served as governor from March 2008 until December 2010, later recounted the events leading to the attack. He explained that he and Sliwa were walking their dog when they noticed three individuals climbing a fire escape. Sliwa warned them he would call the police, leading to a brief argument that ended without further incident.

However, about 45 minutes later, when they returned without their dog, they found a larger crowd. Paterson suggested that Sliwa may have been recognized from the earlier encounter, which escalated the situation. “He was holding off as many other people as he could, but then it became four-to-one, five-to-one, six-to-one, and he was knocked to the ground and dazed by the experience,” Paterson described. He himself was punched multiple times during the altercation.

Sliwa sustained injuries requiring up to five stitches on his lower lip, along with numerous bruises. Paterson expressed gratitude for Sliwa’s bravery during the attack, praising him for not backing down when confronted.

Despite the traumatic experience, Paterson’s immediate thoughts were on the New York Mets, as the team was scheduled to play the Philadelphia Phillies in a playoff game that afternoon. “Governor Paterson’s main concern today is Kodai Senga and the New York Mets, but we will provide any additional updates as necessary,” Darcy said.

In closing, Paterson reiterated that he and Sliwa did not recognize their attackers and did not believe the incident was related to his political background. The attack remains under investigation as authorities seek to identify all individuals involved.
