Piles, commonly known as hemorrhoids, are a problem that many people face but very few openly talk about. The condition can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful, but it is also very common. People of all age groups — office workers, homemakers, senior citizens, pregnant women, and even those who live an active lifestyle — can experience piles.
The encouraging part is that many early-stage or mild cases can be managed right at home. With the right food habits, enough water, and simple remedies, the symptoms can be controlled and even reduced. You don’t always need strong medicines or medical procedures if you take early steps and follow good habits.
This guide explains what piles are, why they happen, the signs to look out for, and the safest home remedies that can help you feel better.
Piles are swollen or enlarged veins in and around the anus. These veins become irritated and cause pain, itching, and discomfort — especially during or after passing stool.
1. Internal Piles
These are found inside the rectum. They usually don’t cause pain but may lead to bleeding.
2. External Piles
These develop under the skin around the anus and are often painful and swollen.
Piles mostly occur due to pressure, strain, or irritation in the anal veins. Some of the most common causes are:
Constipation
Straining while passing stool
Sitting for too long
Low-fibre diet
Pregnancy
Not drinking enough water
Obesity
Lack of physical movement
Chronic diarrhea
Lifting heavy weights without training
If you understand the cause, it becomes easier to control and prevent piles from getting worse.
People dealing with piles may notice:
Pain during bowel movements
Bright red blood on the stool or toilet paper
Swelling around the anus
Itching or burning
A soft or hard lump near the anus
A feeling that the bowel has not completely emptied
If bleeding is heavy or continuous, you should consult a doctor.
Below are effective and easy home remedies that can provide relief from pain, irritation, and swelling.
A sitz bath is one of the quickest ways to get relief.
Fill a tub or large bowl with warm water
Sit in it for 10–15 minutes
Repeat 2–3 times daily
Reduces swelling
Calms irritation
Improves blood flow
Relieves pain
Avoid using very hot water.
Fibre softens stool and prevents constipation, which is a major cause of piles.
Oats
Whole wheat
Beans and lentils
Green leafy vegetables
Chia seeds and flaxseeds
Fruits like papaya, banana, apples
A fibre-rich diet reduces pressure on the anal veins.
Water plays a big role in keeping stool soft.
Aim for 8–10 glasses of water daily.
Warm water, herbal teas, coconut water, and buttermilk are also helpful.
Aloe vera is known for its soothing and healing properties.
Apply pure aloe vera gel gently around the affected area.
Reduces burning
Calms the skin
Helps reduce swelling
Cold treatment can give quick relief from pain and swelling.
Wrap ice in a thin cloth
Apply on the affected area for 10 minutes
Repeat when needed
Ice helps shrink swollen veins.
Coconut oil is a natural moisturizer and has mild antiseptic properties.
Reduces itching
Calms irritated skin
Lowers risk of infection
Apply 2–3 times a day as needed.
Straining puts extreme pressure on veins and makes piles worse.
Do not force bowel movements
Use a small footstool to raise your legs — this improves posture
Go to the toilet when you first feel the urge
A comfortable posture makes passing stool easier.
If constipation is severe, natural remedies can help.
Warm milk with a spoon of ghee
Soaked raisins
Prunes
Isabgol (psyllium husk)
These soften stool and reduce pain during bowel movements.
Healthy fats help in smooth bowel movement.
Ghee
Olive oil
Flaxseed oil
These also support digestion.
Regular movement improves digestion and reduces pressure on veins.
20–30 minutes of walking
Light stretching
Yoga poses like Vajrasana, Malasana, Pavanamuktasana
Even small movements throughout the day help a lot.
Certain foods can worsen piles:
Spicy dishes
Deep-fried snacks
Processed food
Red meat
Bakery items
Excess tea or coffee
Alcohol
These can increase constipation and irritation.
Seek medical help if:
Bleeding is heavy
Pain is severe
A lump becomes hard or very painful
There is fever or signs of infection
Home remedies show no improvement in a week or two
Medical treatment may be needed for advanced cases.
Piles are common and nothing to be embarrassed about. With early care, better eating habits, enough water, and simple home remedies, most people can manage the symptoms easily. The key is to avoid constipation, stay active, and treat early signs so the condition does not worsen.
This article is meant for general awareness and is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. While home remedies may help in mild cases, piles can sometimes become serious. Anyone experiencing continuous bleeding, severe pain, fever, sudden swelling, or symptoms that do not improve within a few days should seek medical attention immediately. Each person’s body responds differently, so it is important to consult a qualified doctor before trying any new remedy, especially if you are pregnant, have other health conditions, or are on regular medication.
