Dubai has continued its remarkable trajectory as a top global tourist destination, welcoming a record 9.31 million international overnight visitors from January to June 2024. This impressive figure represents a 9% increase compared to the same period in 2023, when the city saw 8.55 million arrivals. The growth aligns with the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to reinforce Dubai’s status as a leading global hub for both business and leisure.
The first half of 2024 has been characterized by robust tourism performance, following a landmark year in 2023 when Dubai attracted 17.15 million international visitors. This ongoing success is attributed to the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Under his guidance, the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) has worked diligently with various stakeholders to enhance the city's appeal and reinforce its position in the global tourism landscape.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence of the UAE, emphasized that Dubai’s tourism sector continues to thrive due to the strategic vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid. He noted that the city's sustained growth and attractive proposition set it apart on the global stage, aligning with the D33 Agenda's objectives to make Dubai one of the world's top urban economies. Sheikh Hamdan encouraged industry stakeholders to expand partnerships, explore new opportunities, and enhance Dubai’s value by creating memorable experiences.
The strong tourism growth in H1 2024 reflects Dubai's effective public-private partnerships and global networking efforts. In January, Dubai was named the No.1 global destination for the third consecutive year in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards, and in the first half of the year, it was recognized as the Middle East's leading destination by the World Travel Awards. Additionally, Dubai International Airport and Mina Rashid were named the leading airport and cruise port in the Middle East for 2024.
Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of DET, attributed the tourism growth to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid’s leadership and the D33 Agenda’s goals. He highlighted the city’s successful diversification of market approaches, strong public-private partnerships, and liberal visa policies as key drivers of increased visitation. Almarri also emphasized the need to sustain this growth trajectory and enhance tourism's contribution to Dubai’s GDP.
Issam Kazim, CEO of the Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM), noted that Dubai’s continued advancement in standards and infrastructure, along with its exceptional quality of life, safety, and accessibility, has kept it ahead of the curve. Kazim underscored the city’s commitment to leveraging partnerships and maintaining a strong global presence.
Dubai’s tourism performance in H1 2024 is supported by significant growth in key markets. The GCC and MENA regions accounted for a combined 26% of visitors, with notable increases from Western Europe, South Asia, and CIS/Eastern Europe. The city has also seen growth from North-East and South-East Asia, driven by a recovery in Chinese travel. The Americas, Africa, and Australasia also contributed to the rise in visitor numbers.
Dubai’s hotel sector has continued to excel, with a high average occupancy rate of 78.7% and increased metrics in occupancy, average daily rate (ADR), and revenue per available room (RevPAR). The city’s accommodation options have expanded with new high-profile openings, and additional developments are planned to meet growing demand.
Dubai's status as a culinary and cruise hub has been reinforced with the unveiling of the third edition of the MICHELIN Guide Dubai, featuring 106 restaurants. The city's cruise sector has also seen significant growth, with numerous ship calls and the formation of the Cruise Arabia alliance to promote the region as a cruise destination.
As a global events destination, Dubai has hosted major annual events and business conferences, attracting international attendees and contributing to the city's vibrant tourism scene. The city’s commitment to inclusivity and sustainability continues to shape its tourism strategy, with ongoing initiatives like the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp and the Dubai Can campaign aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting environmental responsibility.
Overall, Dubai’s tourism sector remains dynamic and resilient, reflecting the city’s ambitious vision and dedication to providing exceptional experiences for visitors from around the world.
