DSO and MIT Honor Winner of MIT DesignX Dubai Accelerator at MDXB Demo Day

The MIT DesignX Dubai Accelerator Program (MDXB) recently held its Demo Day at Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO), celebrating the success of its second cohort. The event brought together startups, investors, industry leaders, and members of the DSO community to mark the end of a three-month intensive accelerator program.

The program, which was a collaboration between DSO, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the Global Growth Hub (GGH), was designed to support innovative startups working on technology-driven solutions. Ten startups participated in the second cohort, and they received expert mentorship from MIT DesignX through various workshops.

During the Demo Day, the winning team, "theion," was awarded for its cutting-edge work in lithium-sulfur crystal battery technology. The team, led by CFO Matthias Fengler and Co-Founder Johannes Eisele, was presented with the award in front of distinguished guests, including His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Al Zarooni, Executive Chairman of DIEZ, Dr. Juma Al Matrooshi, Director General of DSO, and Gilad Rosenzweig, Executive Director of DesignX at MIT.

As part of their reward, "theion" received AED 100,000 in equity-free funding and a one-year business setup at Dtec, the Dubai Technology Entrepreneur Campus, which is the largest tech co-working space in the MENA region.

Dr. Juma Al Matrooshi spoke at the event, saying that the MDXB program highlights Dubai’s position as a global hub for innovation. He emphasized DSO’s role in supporting entrepreneurs with access to a thriving ecosystem that includes investors, mentors, and industry leaders, all of which help startups grow and succeed in the market.

Gilad Rosenzweig from MIT DesignX shared his excitement about the program, saying that it’s been great to see the startups in Dubai grow and come up with impactful solutions. He also mentioned how inspiring the entrepreneurial energy in the region is.

Omar Hassan from the Global Growth Hub explained that the program was just the beginning, with phase two focused on helping the startups enter the market. He also mentioned that the third cohort would be opening for recruitment later this year.

Matthias Fengler from "theion" thanked the program for its support, saying it helped their startup refine their ideas and approach. He also mentioned that Dubai’s vibrant startup ecosystem is perfect for expanding their business in the Gulf region.

The startups selected for the second cohort came from Europe, the US, and the GCC, with a common focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles and sustainability. Their projects covered areas like hydrogen technology, waste management, emissions reduction, and energy storage.

MIT DesignX has supported over 170 companies globally, and the expansion of the program into Dubai shows the city's growing role as a center for innovation. The startups that have gone through the program have collectively reached a valuation of over US$1 billion, demonstrating the significant impact of MIT DesignX in fostering global innovation.
