Drydocks World has officially opened its new South Yard, a major expansion that will help the company take on bigger marine and renewable energy projects. The new facility, covering 75,000 square meters, is designed to improve Drydocks World’s ability to make large-scale structures for offshore wind energy and marine projects. This will help the company continue its leadership in these industries.

The South Yard will increase Drydocks World’s fabrication capacity by 40% and its yard capacity by 25%. This means the company can now work on several large projects simultaneously. The yard also has the largest load-out jetty in the Middle East and Africa, which can support structures that weigh up to 37,000 tonnes. This new infrastructure will help Drydocks World meet the growing need for energy transition projects and continue to offer innovative solutions for offshore work worldwide.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the Chairman and CEO of DP World, which owns Drydocks World, said the South Yard expansion is a big step in the company’s commitment to innovation and growth. With the rise in demand for clean energy solutions, this new facility will help Drydocks World lead in renewable energy and set high standards for operational efficiency. He added that this expansion is key to shaping the future of both the maritime and offshore industries.

The new South Yard is equipped with advanced technologies, including robotic profile-cutting machines, automated CNC (Computer Numerical Control) systems, and a heavy-duty rolling machine. These technologies will improve the precision and speed of the work done at the facility. The South Yard can now accommodate up to 3,000 workers daily and is designed to handle complex projects. Some of the types of projects Drydocks World will be able to work on include:

  • Converting Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels
  • Building topsides for offshore platforms
  • Constructing platforms for offshore wind energy, including high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) and direct current (HVDC) converter platforms

By 2026, a 5,000-tonne Sheerleg Floating Crane will also be operational at the South Yard, allowing Drydocks World to handle even bigger and more complex projects.

Captain Rado Antolovic, the CEO of Drydocks World, said the South Yard is a game-changer for the company. It gives them the ability to manage multiple complicated global projects at the same time. It also focuses on smarter logistics, efficient work, and maintaining high health, safety, security, and environmental standards (HSSE). This new facility is also a key part of the company’s mission to support the energy transition and meet the growing needs of the global market.

One important feature of the South Yard is its commitment to sustainability. The entire facility operates on clean energy from the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. This reduces the carbon footprint of the yard and ensures the facility meets international environmental standards. The South Yard is built to support green energy projects and uses sustainable practices throughout its operations, making it an example of Drydocks World’s responsibility toward the environment.

Drydocks World aims to become a leading provider of Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services. By using advanced technology and a skilled workforce, along with a focus on sustainability, Drydocks World is prepared to meet the changing needs of the global energy sector.

Captain Antolovic finished by saying that this expansion isn’t just about adding more space—it’s about showing the company’s dedication to innovation, excellent performance, and supporting the energy transition. With new technologies and sustainable practices, Drydocks World is well-positioned to help achieve global decarbonization goals and bring value to its clients.
