Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, was sentenced to 15 years in prison last year for leaking secret military information. Now, he will begin another court hearing on Monday for more charges.

Teixeira, who is 22 years old, admitted last year that he broke the law by keeping and sharing sensitive government information. This was a major security breach. The leaked information included important details about Russia’s war in Ukraine, military movements, and supplies sent to Ukrainian soldiers. He also shared information about plans by a country that wanted to harm U.S. soldiers.

In his new hearing, Teixeira faces charges of not following orders and trying to cover up his actions. Military lawyers say that in the military, it is very important to follow orders, and not doing so is a serious problem. But Teixeira’s lawyers argue that he should not be punished again for something he has already been charged with.

Before he was sentenced last year, Teixeira apologized for what he did. He said he was sorry for the harm he caused. He admitted to taking secret documents and sharing them on the social media platform Discord. “I am sorry for all the damage I caused,” he said. “I know I am fully responsible for everything that happened.”

After the hearing, Teixeira hugged his lawyer and smiled at his family. His family didn’t speak to reporters, but they wrote letters asking the judge to be kind to Teixeira. His mother, Dawn Dufault, said her son was sorry and ready to face his punishment. She asked the judge to think about who he is as a person and the problems he faced.

The leak of secrets shocked the U.S. government and made people worried about how well the country can protect its sensitive information. The Biden administration worked hard to fix the damage caused. The Pentagon also took steps to keep better control of classified information and punished military members who didn’t report Teixeira’s actions sooner.

Teixeira, from North Dighton, Massachusetts, worked as a cyber transport systems specialist at the Otis Air National Guard Base. His job gave him access to important military information. He is now on unpaid leave from the Air National Guard.

Prosecutors said that Teixeira first typed out secret documents and then started taking photos of the documents that said “SECRET” and “TOP SECRET.” Before he was caught, the authorities found a broken tablet, laptop, and Xbox in a dumpster near his home. It looked like he was trying to hide his actions.
