Iran has strongly denied claims that it was involved in the recent violence in Syria’s Alawite areas, where hundreds of civilians have lost their lives.
The fighting started last Thursday between Syria’s new security forces and supporters of former president Bashar Al Assad, who has been a close ally of Iran for many years.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitoring group, at least 973 civilians have been killed in the violence. The group also reported that hundreds of security forces and pro-Assad fighters have died, bringing the total death toll to over 1,300.

Several media reports, including one from Saudi-owned Al Arabiya TV, have suggested that Iran and its allied groups played a role in the ongoing conflict. However, Iran has firmly rejected these allegations.
On Sunday, Syria’s interim President Ahmed Al Sharaa blamed the unrest on “remnants of the old regime and foreign forces” who, he claimed, were trying to spark another civil war in the country.
In response, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei, dismissed the accusations as “completely false and misleading.” Speaking at his weekly press conference on Monday, he said, “Blaming Iran and its allies for this situation is entirely wrong. This is a deliberate attempt to mislead people.”
Baqaei also condemned the attacks on Syria’s minorities, including Alawites, Christians, and Druze communities. “There is no reason to target these groups. Such violence has deeply hurt the emotions of people in the region and around the world,” he added.
Bashar Al Assad fled Syria in December, seeking refuge in Moscow, after rebel forces led by the Sunni Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) took control of Damascus in a swift military campaign.
During Syria’s long civil war, Iran supported Assad by providing military advisors and other assistance. However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told AFP in an interview on Friday that Iran is now only an “observer” in Syria’s current situation.
“We do not have any official relationship with the new Syrian government, and we are in no rush to establish one,” he stated.
