China Urges Halt to US Arming Taiwan, Vows "Countermeasures

In Beijing, China, on Monday, the government vowed to take retaliatory measures against companies involved in arms sales to Taiwan following the US approval of a $300-million deal to enhance the island's defenses. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and expresses intent to reunify, while the US provides weapons to support Taiwan's defense under congressional requirements.

Last week, the US State Department approved an arms package aimed at strengthening Taipei's joint battle command and control system. In response, China declared it would take resolute measures to defend its sovereignty, promising countermeasures against relevant enterprises involved in arms sales to Taiwan. Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin urged the US to cease arming Taiwan, avoid escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait, and refrain from supporting Taiwan's separatist forces seeking independence by force.

Wang emphasized China's commitment to eventual reunification and criticized the dangerous trend of arming Taiwan. Beijing has increased pressure on Taiwan since President Tsai Ing-wen's tenure began in 2016, regularly deploying warplanes and vessels near the island. Both Washington and Taipei have cautioned Beijing against interfering in Taiwan's upcoming presidential elections.
