Cameron Young delivered the biggest birdie of his career on the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass, setting up a thrilling finish to win The Players Championship. His sand wedge landed just 10 feet from the hole, tying him for the lead, and he followed it with a perfect 375-yard drive on the 18th to secure a one-shot victory.
“This is such a pressure-filled moment, and I’m proud of the shots I hit,” Young said.
The win marks only Young’s second PGA Tour victory, after his first at the Wyndham Championship last year. He had previously tied the tour record with seven runner-up finishes. This time, he proved he could perform on the PGA Tour’s most challenging course, often called the “fifth major.”
Matt Fitzpatrick of England came close but missed an 8-foot putt on the final hole to force a playoff, finishing one shot behind Young. Ludvig Aberg, who had a three-shot lead entering the final round, collapsed on the back nine with double bogeys, ending in a tie for fifth.
Young’s performance on the 17th island green and the 18th hole showcased his nerves of steel. “That hole looked really small from close range,” he admitted after tapping in for par.
Xander Schauffele finished third with a strong closing 69, while Robert MacIntyre and Sepp Straka also had notable performances.
Reflecting on his win, Young said, “This course tests patience, skill, and focus. I executed well and am proud of my performance this week.”
The victory moves Young up to No. 4 in the world rankings and positions him strongly for upcoming major tournaments.
