BTS made a powerful comeback on Saturday as Seoul shut down its central area for a mega concert at Gwanghwamun Square. Authorities expected around 260,000 fans to gather, while millions watched the show live on Netflix.
The one-hour concert marked BTS’s first album release in over three years. Their new album Arirang sold 3.98 million copies on its first day, according to HYBE. The event also kicks off their global tour starting in April.
The group, which debuted in 2013, has become one of the biggest global music acts. BTS is the most streamed K-pop artist on Spotify and has also appeared at major global platforms like the White House and the UN General Assembly. In 2022, the group paused activities as members completed South Korea’s mandatory military service.
To manage safety, Seoul authorities deployed over 8,200 personnel, installed metal detectors, blocked roads, and even prepared to jam unauthorized drones. Medical stations and more than 2,500 public toilets were also arranged. These strict measures come after the tragic Itaewon crowd crush, which raised concerns about large gatherings.
The concert began at 8:00 PM local time. While 22,000 free tickets were distributed, non-ticket holders could watch the show on giant screens in public areas. The event was streamed live in 190 countries.
BTS’s world tour is expected to run until 2027, covering 34 regions with at least 82 shows. Experts estimate total revenue could reach 2.7 trillion won ($1.81 billion), making it one of the biggest tours ever, competing with tours like The Eras Tour and Music of the Spheres World Tour.
Analysts predict total attendance could reach 5 to 6 million fans worldwide. The use of a 360-degree stage is expected to increase capacity and improve fan experience. Merchandise sales are also expected to generate huge revenue, with fans spending heavily on official items like the “ARMY Bomb” light stick.
Overall, BTS’s comeback is not just a musical return but a major global event, expected to generate massive economic impact and set new records in the music industry.
