The German Army is moving rapidly to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its battlefield operations, aiming to significantly speed up wartime decision-making. The initiative is inspired by lessons learned from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where advanced technologies have transformed modern warfare.
Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, who took over as army chief last October, highlighted how Ukrainian forces are using AI-driven systems to analyse vast amounts of battlefield data. During his visits to Ukrainian command centres, he observed how drones and modern sensors are generating unprecedented volumes of real-time information.
According to Freuding, AI systems can process this data far more efficiently than humans. By analysing patterns from years of combat data, these tools can predict enemy behaviour in similar scenarios and suggest effective countermeasures.
From Days to Minutes: Faster Military Analysis
Freuding explained that tasks which previously required hundreds of personnel and several days to complete can now be executed much faster with AI support. This technological shift is seen as critical to disrupting an opponent’s decision-making cycle, a key factor in gaining battlefield advantage.
He stressed that relying solely on traditional methods would no longer be sufficient in modern warfare, where speed and precision are crucial.
Human Control Remains Central
Despite the growing role of AI, the German military is committed to maintaining human oversight. Freuding emphasised that AI will function strictly as a support tool, assisting soldiers rather than replacing them.
“The responsibility for making balanced and informed decisions will always remain with humans,” he stated, addressing concerns about the ethical use of AI in combat situations.
Focus on NATO Alignment and Security
Germany is also ensuring that its AI systems align with evolving standards set by NATO. While the possibility of developing a European-based system remains open, Freuding acknowledged that American technologies may offer faster deployment due to their advanced capabilities.
One such example is the AI platform Maven, currently used by the U.S. Army and developed by Palantir Technologies. The system processes battlefield imagery and video data to enhance situational awareness and accelerate decision-making.
Balancing Speed With Data Security
Freuding underlined the importance of quickly deploying effective AI solutions while also addressing key concerns such as data sovereignty and security. He suggested that combining data from Ukrainian operations and German military exercises could help train more reliable and effective AI systems.
As warfare continues to evolve, Germany’s push towards AI integration reflects a broader shift among global militaries to leverage technology for faster, smarter, and more efficient decision-making on the battlefield.
