14 Dead as Wedding Bus Falls Into River in Pakistan, Bride Survives

A tragic incident occurred in northern Pakistan on Wednesday when a bus carrying wedding guests plunged into a river, resulting in at least 14 confirmed deaths. The crash took place as the passengers were returning home after attending a wedding, and the bride is the only known survivor so far.

According to Wazir Asad Ali, a rescue official in Gilgit-Baltistan, there were 25 people on board the bus at the time of the accident. Authorities have confirmed the recovery of 14 bodies, and 10 individuals are still missing. The bride, however, is reported to be out of danger and is receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Gilgit.

Naik Alam, a senior police officer, stated that preliminary investigations suggest the bus driver was speeding and lost control while navigating a curve. The crash occurred as the groom’s family, who had traveled over 500 kilometers (about 300 miles) from Punjab for the wedding, was on their way back home.

This tragic accident highlights the ongoing issue of road safety in Pakistan, where such accidents are unfortunately common. Poor infrastructure, inadequate safety measures, and insufficient driver training are all contributing factors to the high frequency of fatal accidents in the country. This fatal crash follows a similar pattern of deadly road incidents earlier in the year, including a bus crash in August in Balochistan that claimed 12 lives when the vehicle plunged into a ravine along the Makran Coastal Highway. Additionally, another accident that same month saw 24 people killed when a bus veered into a ravine near Azad Pattan, situated on the border between Punjab and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
