Vir Das mocks Indian award shows after watching the Oscars

Comedian and actor Vir Das is known for speaking his mind on current topics. Recently, after watching the 97th Academy Awards, he shared his thoughts on Indian award shows through an Instagram post.

On Monday evening, Vir Das posted about how Indian award shows don’t use modern stand-up comedians for their events. He wrote, “While watching a major entertainment awards show, I’m pretty sure a few fellow Indian comedians play a game in our head. We wonder why Indian award shows don’t use modern stand-up comedians at major awards.”

However, he quickly pointed out that making "edgy jokes" at such events could lead to a huge backlash. He continued, “Then... we think of some of the jokes we would do, the utter chaos that would follow, and then we think it’s probably for the best.”

Das also commented on how Indian award shows start late and have long sponsorship announcements, making it difficult for comedians to perform properly. He joked, “Also, we remember the opening monologue is at the top of the show, which logically requires showing up on time and staying for the whole show. Again, this reaffirms... probably for the best.” He added humorously that doing an "edgy joke" after a series of brand promotions like "Manikchand pan pasand fun flips Zorro plus Zandu Bandu MDH MCD Motorola Parivar..." is not ideal.

Vir Das has previously hosted the International Emmy Awards, so he understands how international award shows function.

Meanwhile, the 97th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 3 (IST). Hosted by Conan O'Brien, the event saw big wins for the film Anora, which won Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress.
