Olympic Men’s Soccer Tournament Opens in Chaos After Morocco Upsets Argentina
The Olympic men’s soccer tournament started with turmoil on Wednesday as Morocco’s 2-1 victory over Argentina was marred by violence and confusion. The match, held at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Etienne, ended dramatically, with Morocco fans storming the field and hurling bottles from the stands. The chaos erupted after Argentina’s Cristian Medina scored a controversial goal in the 16th minute of added time.

The game was suspended for nearly two hours as security struggled to manage the enraged crowd. The confusion led to uncertainty about whether the game had concluded or merely paused. Despite announcements for the crowd to leave, players remained and returned to the pitch for a final three minutes in an empty stadium. Medina's goal was disallowed by VAR for offside, and Morocco ultimately secured the win.
In response to the incident, Argentina’s soccer federation has lodged a formal complaint with FIFA, requesting regulatory measures for what they describe as a serious event. “Paris 2024 is working with the relevant stakeholders to understand the causes and identify appropriate actions,” said a spokesperson for the Paris organizers.
The upheaval began when Moroccan fans, believing Medina’s goal had denied their team a crucial victory, began throwing objects onto the field. Some Argentina players were visibly startled when a flare was thrown. Bottles and cups littered the pitch, causing further confusion.
Initially, it was thought that the game had ended, and FIFA’s website even declared it over. However, organizers clarified that the match was still ongoing, and VAR would review the controversial goal. After a lengthy delay, players re-entered the field, warming up before the final three minutes were played.
Morocco had been leading 2-0 before Argentina made a comeback. Giuliano Simeone scored in the 68th minute, and Medina's disallowed goal led to the chaos. The match was broadcast widely in Morocco, where national pride surged following the country's success in the 2022 World Cup.
Zak Eddakir, a 28-year-old from Rabat, explained that soccer’s significance in Morocco and the disappointment over the disallowed goal fueled the fan reaction. “In football, it’s normal,” he said. “When you see something like that, it’s really hard for supporters. Here, football is life. Even the king supports it.”
Khadija Seffany, a local hairdresser, expressed her frustration, initially believing the delay indicated bias against Morocco. “Here, we’re one of the best in the world. We drink football. We eat football,” she said, reflecting the deep connection Moroccans have with the sport.
