Dubai:
The United States has significantly increased its military presence in the Middle East, giving President Donald Trump the option to launch strikes on Iran as early as this weekend, according to The New York Times, citing US administration and Pentagon sources.
The buildup includes two aircraft carrier strike groups, fighter jets like F-35s and F/A-18s, refueling tankers, drones, and enhanced missile defenses, positioning the US to target Iran’s nuclear sites, missile systems, and military facilities. About 30,000 to 40,000 US troops are stationed across the region.
Despite this military readiness, diplomatic talks continue. Indirect negotiations in Geneva earlier this week allowed Iran to propose further measures, though major differences remain unresolved. President Trump has demanded Iran halt uranium enrichment, while Iran maintains its right to peaceful nuclear development.
US Military Posture
USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald R. Ford carrier strike groups deployed
F-35 stealth fighters, F/A-18 attack jets, electronic warfare planes, and drones positioned
Patriot and THAAD missile defense systems reinforced
Long-range bombers on heightened alert
Iranian Stance
Iranian officials, including atomic energy chief Mohammad Eslami, insist that nuclear enrichment is a legitimate right. They stated Iran’s nuclear program complies with International Atomic Energy Agency rules.
Israel’s Readiness
Israel has also heightened alert levels, preparing for possible joint operations with the US. Operational plans suggest a sustained multi-day strike to degrade Iran’s military assets. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to stress the threat posed by Iran’s missile program.
Risks of Escalation
Experts warn any attack could trigger missile retaliation from Iran targeting Israel and US installations. Even a limited strike could spark unpredictable consequences across the region.
Diplomacy vs Conflict
President Trump maintains that diplomacy is preferred, but military options remain ready. Analysts note that delays may help the US prepare but also give Iran time to plan countermeasures. The president’s decision could shape Middle East security for months.
