The United States Commerce Department has banned the Chinese artificial intelligence model DeepSeek from all government devices. According to messages seen by reporters and people familiar with the matter, the Commerce Department told its staff about this ban in recent weeks.
In an official email, the department said the ban is to keep government information safe. The message warned staff not to download, view, or access any apps, websites, or programs related to DeepSeek on their work devices. It clearly said that DeepSeek is not allowed on any government-furnished equipment (GFE).

The Commerce Department did not immediately comment on the matter. It is also unclear if the ban applies to the entire U.S. government or only to the Commerce Department.
The ban comes after DeepSeek’s cheap AI models caused a large drop in global stock markets in January. Investors became worried that these low-cost models could hurt the U.S.’s lead in artificial intelligence.
U.S. officials and lawmakers have also raised concerns about DeepSeek, saying it could put private data and secret government information at risk. They fear that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) could access sensitive details through the AI model.
In February, U.S. Congressmen Josh Gottheimer and Darin LaHood introduced a bill to ban DeepSeek from all government devices. Earlier this month, they sent letters to governors across the country, asking them to do the same on state-level government equipment.
In a letter dated March 3, the lawmakers warned that using DeepSeek could unknowingly expose sensitive information, like contracts, documents, and financial records, to the Chinese government. They said that this data could be a powerful tool for the CCP, which is seen as a foreign threat by the U.S.
Following this, several states, including Virginia, Texas, and New York, banned DeepSeek from their government devices. A group of 21 state attorneys general also asked Congress to pass a law banning the Chinese AI model nationwide.
The U.S. government’s move to block DeepSeek shows its growing concerns over China’s influence in artificial intelligence. It also reflects America’s effort to protect its data from foreign threats, especially from China.
