Three people in the UAE are facing execution for the murder of an Israeli rabbi, Tzvi Kogan, in a terrorist attack last November. The court in Abu Dhabi sentenced the three men to death, while another person who helped them was given a life sentence in prison.
The court ruled that the crime was committed with "terrorist intention." Kogan, a 28-year-old rabbi from Moldova-Israel, was working in the UAE as a representative of the Chabad Hasidic movement, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish group. His death shocked both the small Jewish and Israeli communities in the UAE.
The murder of Kogan was a rare violent incident involving an Israeli in the UAE. The suspects, who were identified as nationals of Uzbekistan, kidnapped and killed Kogan. The court found enough evidence to convict them, including confessions from the suspects, forensic reports, and witness statements.

The four suspects were found guilty of "premeditated murder with terrorist intention." The UAE's capital punishment sentences are automatically appealed and reviewed by the Federal Supreme Court.
The authorities arrested the three main suspects in Istanbul, Turkey, in late November. The UAE expressed thanks to Turkey for helping with their arrest. At that time, the suspects were named as Olimboy Tohirovich (28), Makhmudjon Abdurakhim (28), and Azizbek Kamilovich (33). The identity and nationality of the fourth suspect is not clear.
This case comes after the UAE and Israel normalized relations in 2020 under the Abraham Accords, which also involved Bahrain and Morocco. The UAE became the first Gulf country to establish diplomatic ties with Israel and the third Arab nation to do so, after Egypt and Jordan. The UAE also opened its first official synagogue in Abu Dhabi in 2023 to cater to its growing Jewish community.
In response to the case, Attorney General Hamad al-Shamsi said the UAE is a model for coexistence and tolerance, where laws protect all residents, regardless of their religion or ethnicity.
