Scientists have created a new kind of electronic skin, or e-skin, that works more like real human skin. Unlike older versions, this e-skin needs fewer sensors and uses less energy. It can even sense magnetic fields, which allows it to interact with devices without physical touch.
How It Works
The e-skin has three main parts:
A thin, flexible base layer: This layer is made of a lightweight, transparent material. It lets air and moisture pass through, so the skin underneath can breathe. This makes it comfortable to wear for long periods.
A magnetosensitive layer: This part covers the entire e-skin. It detects magnetic signals when it comes near a magnetic source, like a magnet.
A central processing unit (CPU): The CPU receives signals from the magnetosensitive layer and figures out the exact location of the magnetic source.
When the e-skin senses a magnetic field, the electrical resistance of the material changes. The CPU picks up this change and processes the data, just like the human brain processes touch signals.
More Accurate Signal Detection
To make sure the e-skin detects magnetic signals accurately, the researchers used a tomography-based method. This is the same technique used in MRI and CT scans. It helps the e-skin read signals from different angles, making the detection more precise.

According to Pavlo Makushko, the lead researcher from Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), earlier e-skins struggled to pick up weak magnetic signals. However, this new design solved the problem by improving the sensitivity of the magnetosensitive material.
Touchless Interaction in Any Environment
The most exciting thing about this e-skin is that it allows touchless control. This means you could operate devices without touching them, even in difficult environments like:
Underwater: You could control machines without getting wet.
Extreme weather: You could use your phone while wearing gloves in freezing weather.
Sterile labs: Scientists could interact with tools without breaking the sterile conditions.
Possible Uses of This E-Skin
This e-skin could revolutionize many industries. Here are some of its possible applications:
Robots with human-like touch: Robots could use it for delicate tasks such as cooking, medical care, or rescue missions.
Help for people with sensory issues: Blind people could extend their sense of touch over longer distances.
Better prosthetics: People with prosthetic hands could interact with touchscreens, which is difficult with regular prosthetics.
Virtual reality (VR): It could let users interact with digital environments without physical controllers.
A Step Toward the Future
The researchers believe that this new e-skin could soon be commercially available. It may change how we interact with technology in daily life, making devices easier to use, even in challenging conditions.
