UConn Joins Top Seeds in Women’s Final Four

This week in Tampa, Florida, the best teams in women’s college basketball will compete in the national semifinals. The top teams, South Carolina, UCLA, Texas, and UConn, will play against each other. UConn, which has been playing very well over the last month, is the favorite to win the championship. UConn beat Southern California, which didn’t have its best player.

South Carolina, led by Coach Dawn Staley, is going to the Final Four for the fifth time in a row. The Gamecocks are trying to win their second straight title, something no team has done since UConn won four in a row from 2013 to 2016. South Carolina will face Texas in the first semifinal. This will be the fourth time these two teams have played this season. In the last game, South Carolina won the SEC Tournament by 17 points.

The second semifinal will be between UConn and UCLA. UConn is in the Final Four for the second year in a row and their 24th time overall, which is a record. The Huskies have won 11 national titles, more than any other team. Paige Bueckers, UConn’s star player, wants to help Coach Geno Auriemma win his 12th title.

UCLA is in the Final Four for the first time in the NCAA tournament. The Bruins won a national title in 1978, but that was before the NCAA Tournament started for women’s basketball. They want to make history by winning again.

Texas is back in the Final Four for the first time since 2003. Coach Vic Schaefer, who also led Mississippi State to the championship game in 2017 and 2018, is trying to win with Texas now. The Longhorns have great players like Rori Harmon and Madison Booker, and they will need to play their best against South Carolina.

South Carolina’s defense has been strong this season, especially in their games against Texas. In those games, they made Texas shoot less than 30%. But in one game, when Texas shot 44%, they beat South Carolina. Coach Schaefer knows how tough South Carolina is, and he says his team needs to be strong and ready to fight.

In the UConn vs. UCLA game, UCLA has a star in Lauren Betts, who is 6-foot-7. She has been very good in the tournament, scoring a lot of points and getting many rebounds. UConn will need to find a way to stop her. But UConn has one of the best players, Paige Bueckers, who has been playing great. Bueckers is determined to win the championship before she finishes her college career. She has also had help from Azzi Fudd and freshman Sarah Strong, who has had an amazing first season.
