An investigation is underway in Dublin following the discovery of two men's bodies in the Grand Canal. The incident unfolded shortly after 08:00 local time on Saturday when Gardaí and emergency services responded to reports of a body in the canal. Irish broadcaster RTÉ confirmed that the bodies of two males, both in their 40s, were recovered from the water shortly thereafter. Tragically, both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
While Gardaí have identified the men, formal identification processes are ongoing. Post-mortem examinations and local inquiries will guide further investigations by law enforcement.
Both men were Irish nationals, and it is understood that they were homeless. A forensic examination is being conducted within tents set up near the canal's banks, close to the Ranelagh Road bridge where the bodies were discovered.
Reports indicate that a significant number of people had been residing in tents near the area where the bodies were found on Saturday morning. This incident comes amid ongoing efforts to relocate asylum seekers who were previously living in tents along the Grand Canal to alternative accommodations back in May.

Fianna Fáil TD Jim O'Callaghan offered his condolences to the families affected, emphasizing that the direction of the investigation hinges on the outcomes of Garda inquiries. He highlighted the dangers associated with homelessness and living in tents, stressing the importance of ensuring safe and adequate accommodations for those in vulnerable situations.
The tragic discovery has prompted reflections on the challenges faced by homeless individuals and the need for robust support systems to prevent such occurrences in the future.
