Despite the harrowing ordeal, Bishop Emmanuel assured his followers of his recovery, expressing forgiveness towards his attacker in a heartfelt gesture captured in a YouTube video released Tuesday. The attack occurred in an area known as a hub for Sydney's Assyrian Christian community, many of whom have sought refuge from persecution and conflict in Iraq and Syria. Bishop Emmanuel, known for his outspoken views on topics such as Covid-19 vaccines, lockdowns, and Islam, urged calm and reconciliation in the aftermath of the incident.
However, the assault incited outrage among congregants and community members, leading to tumultuous scenes outside the church premises. Hundreds gathered, some engaging in violent acts, resulting in injuries to law enforcement officers and damage to numerous police vehicles.
In response, Bishop Emmanuel appealed for peace and cooperation with law enforcement, emphasizing the importance of abiding by the law and maintaining a Christian demeanor. He reminded his followers of the blessings of being Australian citizens and urged them to embody the values of Christianity in their actions.
Meanwhile, authorities have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the violence, with further arrests anticipated in the days ahead. Despite the turmoil, Bishop Emmanuel's message of forgiveness and unity continues to resonate, serving as a beacon of hope amid adversity.
