South Korean Team Develops 'Iron Man' Robot to Help Paraplegics Walk

Scientists at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in South Korea have built a fantastic robot suit. It's designed to assist individuals who can't walk, like paraplegics. The lightweight, intelligent robot suit, named the WalkON Suit F1, empowers them to regain motion. It enables them to walk, navigate obstacles, and even ascend steps, gifting them newfound independence.

Weighing a mere 50 kilograms (110 pounds), the WalkON Suit F1 is constructed from sturdy materials such as aluminum and titanium. It houses 12 motors that replicate natural motions, offering a walking-like sensation.

The suit comes equipped with specialized sensors throughout its body and soles, capturing over 1,000 signals per second, aiding it in understanding users' intentions and maintaining their equilibrium when mobilised. The standout feature of the WalkON Suit F1 is its capability to approach someone seated in a wheelchair and assist them in standing. This is a lifesaver for those without use of their legs.

Team member Kim Seung-hwan, himself a paraplegic, showcased the suit's functionality. He demonstrated walking at a pace of 3.2 kilometers per hour (2 miles per hour), climbing stairs, and even lateral movement to sit on a bench. His demonstration spotlighted how this robotic suit fosters self-sufficiency in mobility-challenged people.

The seed for this robot was sown by the movie "Iron Man." Team member Park Jeong-su, enchanted by the superhero, was driven to apply robots for the betterment of humankind. The WalkON Suit F1 comes fitted with special "eyes" or sensors for awareness of its surroundings to avoid obstacles and measure stair height — a boon for those unable to feel their legs.

In the Cybathlon 2024, an event where the disabled demonstrate the use of technology in accomplishing tasks, Kim Seung-hwan utilized the WalkON Suit F1 and clinched a gold in the exoskeleton category, attesting to its effectiveness. Kim's dream is to share walking experiences with his son and tell him about his own ability to walk once. The team at KAIST envisions the WalkON Suit F1 becoming a regular part of the lives of the disabled, promoting their freedom and independence.
