Around 50 armed men attacked a train in southwest Pakistan on Tuesday. They blew up the railway track and fired rockets at the Jaffar Express, which had more than 400 passengers on board. A security officer said the attackers were from a group called the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), which later claimed responsibility for the attack.

The train was stopped in a remote mountain area, making rescue efforts difficult. Helicopters and hundreds of troops were sent to save the passengers. The government said they had rescued 155 people, but it was not clear how many were still being held by the armed men. The BLA said they had taken 214 people hostage.
Passengers on the train were terrified. One man, Muhammad Ashraf, said that people were attacked, many were hurt, and some had died. The train was stuck inside a tunnel, and the driver lost his life after being badly injured.
The BLA warned that they would start killing the hostages if their demands were not met. They said they wanted the Pakistani government to release Baloch political prisoners and missing persons. They also shared a message from one of their men inside the train, urging people in Balochistan to join their fight against the government.
A security officer said that the attackers checked the identity of the passengers, searching for soldiers and security officers. So far, at least 11 people, including paramilitary troops, had been killed. The military operation against the attackers was ongoing. Officials reported that 27 BLA fighters had been killed, but the BLA denied any losses on their side.
The BLA is the biggest armed group fighting against the Pakistani government in Balochistan, a province rich in minerals and located near Afghanistan and Iran. The situation remains tense as rescue teams continue their efforts to save the remaining hostages.
