South Korean police have raided the presidential office in a major move related to President Yoon Suk-yeol's decision to declare martial law, according to a report from Yonhap news agency on Wednesday. This raid comes as the president is being investigated for insurrection after his surprise martial law declaration in early December.
Although Yoon has not been arrested or questioned, his decision to declare martial law has caused a lot of trouble in the country. This action, which was meant to control growing protests, shocked the people and led to a crisis in the country’s leadership. Many lawmakers, even from Yoon’s political party, the People Power Party (PPP), strongly opposed the decision.
The former South Korean Defense Minister, Kim Yong-hyun, is accused of being heavily involved in the failed martial law plan. He reportedly tried to take his own life while being held in detention. This situation has made the crisis worse, with many people questioning the president’s actions.

Adding to the chaos, the head of the National Police, Cho Ji-ho, was arrested early on Wednesday. He is charged with insurrection for sending police officers to stop lawmakers from entering parliament after Yoon declared martial law. This led to a standoff where lawmakers, including some from Yoon’s own party, broke through the police cordon to enter Parliament. They then voted to demand that the president cancel the martial law, which he did later that night.
The declaration of martial law created panic across the country, especially because South Korea is an important country in Asia and a close ally of the United States. It caused political and economic problems, and many people became uncertain about the country’s future.
The opposition party, the Democratic Party (DP), has now taken steps to impeach President Yoon. On Wednesday, DP leader Lee Jae-myung said they would hold an impeachment vote in parliament on Saturday. Some members of Yoon’s party, the PPP, have also started to support the idea of impeachment. The first attempt to impeach Yoon failed last Saturday when many PPP members didn’t show up for the vote. But now, Lee Jae-Myung says that the impeachment is moving forward, and nothing will stop it.
The situation in South Korea is still developing, and it remains uncertain what will happen next. The country is facing a serious leadership crisis, which could change the way it is governed in the future. The public and the government are both closely watching how things will unfold.
