Police in Western Australia have confirmed that a surfer who went missing was “taken by a shark.” This conclusion came after search teams found his surfboard with bite marks near the place of the attack.
The surfer, who was 37 years old and named Steven Payne, was attacked by a shark while surfing at Wharton Beach, which is in a remote part of Western Australia. The attack happened around midday on Tuesday. Payne was in chest-deep water, about 50 meters (164 feet) from the shore, along with two other surfers. The other surfers could not do anything to help.

Police later said that the search for Steven Payne has now turned into a recovery operation. This means they are now trying to recover his body, not expecting to find him alive. The police confirmed that a surfboard with bite marks was found in the water.
Before the attack, a shark was seen in the area, and people heard screams coming from the spot where Steven was surfing. Sadly, this is the fourth shark attack in Australia in recent months that has led to a death. Earlier this year, a 17-year-old girl was killed by a shark while swimming off an island on the east coast of Australia. Just a month before that, a 28-year-old surfer was killed in South Australia. There was also a deadly attack in Queensland in December, where a 40-year-old man was bitten in the neck while spearfishing.
This tragic event highlights the dangers of sharks in Australian waters, and it has left many in shock and mourning.
