People in Bannu, a city in northwest Pakistan, began getting ready for funeral prayers for 12 people who died in a double suicide bombing the day before. The bombing took place at a military base in the city, and a group linked to the Pakistani Taliban said they did it.

Two bombers got through the wall around the base, and the explosions went off while many people were breaking their fast for Ramadan or praying at a nearby mosque. After the bombs went off, other attackers rushed in, and a gunfight started with soldiers.

The explosions were very strong, breaking walls, tearing off roofs, and damaging the mosque. Along with the 12 people who died, 30 others were hurt, with some of them in serious condition. It is still unknown how many soldiers were hurt or killed.

On Wednesday, workers used machines to clean up the area where houses used to be, and prayer mats covered in debris were found on the mosque floor. The city held a day of mourning for the victims. Funeral prayers for the dead were planned to take place at a sports complex.

Alam Khan, a community leader, said that all schools in the area were closed, and most shops stayed shut. Rescue workers had already finished their work and found the bodies of three worshippers who were trapped under the mosque's collapsed roof.

Early on Wednesday, gunshots could still be heard as security forces checked the area for any militants who might still be there. Bannu is in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, close to Afghanistan, and there are many armed groups in the area. Jaish Al-Fursan, a group connected to the Pakistani Taliban, took responsibility for the bombing.
