NASA to Train Indian Astronaut for International Space Station Mission

In New Delhi, on Monday, NASA Administrator Mr. Sullivan and Indian National Security Advisor Mr. Doval announced the conclusion of a Strategic Framework for Human Spaceflight Cooperation. This agreement aims to deepen interoperability in space exploration and includes plans to initiate advanced training for Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) astronauts at NASA's Johnson Space Centre.

In Washington, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson highlighted the expansion of collaboration between the US and India in space exploration. Following the iCET Dialogue, a joint effort aboard the International Space Station involving an ISRO astronaut is being planned. Nelson emphasized that these initiatives, stemming from his previous visit to India, aim to advance human spaceflight capabilities and benefit life on Earth.

The Strategic Framework underscores the commitment to enhance the partnership between NASA and ISRO. Discussions between Sullivan and Doval also addressed securing a mission for the first-ever joint space effort between the two agencies, which signifies a significant milestone in Indo-US space cooperation.

Additionally, both leaders acknowledged preparations for the launch of the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite. This joint endeavor will monitor the Earth's surface, aiding global efforts in climate change mitigation and other critical challenges.

Beyond space cooperation, Sullivan and Doval discussed broader technological advancements critical to both nations' strategic interests. They unveiled new initiatives in artificial intelligence, semiconductor technology, critical minerals, advanced telecommunications, and defense space, reinforcing the robust Indo-US collaboration envisioned under the iCET framework launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden in 2022.

Sullivan's visit to Delhi, accompanied by a high-level delegation, underscores the Biden Administration's commitment to deepening bilateral ties with India, particularly in advancing critical and emerging technologies for the benefit of both countries and global welfare.
