Trump: Birthright Citizenship Not for Unqualified People or Kids

The discussion about birthright citizenship is getting stronger again, with President Donald Trump speaking out about it. He believes that this rule, which gives U.S. citizenship to children born in the U.S., was originally meant to help the children of slaves, not for people from all over the world to come to the U.S. and claim citizenship.

Trump said, "When birthright citizenship was first made, it was meant for the children of slaves. It wasn’t meant for the whole world to come into the United States." He also added, "Now, people who are unqualified, and their unqualified children, are using this rule. This was not what it was meant for."

Trump said that while the rule was a good thing for children of slaves, it shouldn't be taken advantage of by people from other countries. He supports birthright citizenship but believes it shouldn't apply to everyone. "I am totally for it, but it wasn't meant for everyone to come to the United States," he said.

Trump has said this before, and he's taken action to change the rule. When he first became president, he signed an order to try to end birthright citizenship for children born to parents who are not citizens, but a court blocked it. Trump is still hopeful that the U.S. Supreme Court will support his idea in the future.

To back up Trump, some Republican Senators, like Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, and Katie Britt, have made a new bill called the Birthright Citizenship Act of 2025. This bill says that birthright citizenship should only apply to children born to illegal immigrants or people with temporary visas. The senators believe that the current system encourages illegal immigration and could be a risk to national security.

This is a hot topic in the U.S., with some people supporting Trump’s view, while others believe that birthright citizenship is an important part of American values and fairness.
