Mastering Cover-Worthy Images: Greece’s Papatsanis Shares Insights at Xposure 2025

The 9th edition of the International Photography Festival, Xposure 2025, is featuring a fascinating exhibition called Mushroom Magic. This special collection brings to light the hidden world of fungi through stunning photographs. Each image in the collection presents mushrooms in a way that makes them look almost surreal, showing how much beauty exists in nature’s smallest details.

For more than 20 years, Greek photographer Agorastos Papatsanis has dedicated his life to capturing mushrooms in their natural surroundings. His goal is to help people appreciate how these tiny organisms play a big role in nature. On the first day of Xposure 2025, Papatsanis gave a talk where he shared his journey of exploring and photographing mushrooms. He explained how his work blends art and science to reveal the mystery of fungi.

Papatsanis began documenting mushrooms in 1999 as part of a scientific project. Over time, his photography style evolved into a mix of realism and artistic storytelling. “I want to show mushrooms in their natural environment, but with a touch of illusion,” he said.

He believes every photographer should have their own style. “When you take pictures like everyone else, you lose what makes you unique,” he added.

The Role of Mushrooms in Nature

Papatsanis’ photographs highlight how mushrooms and trees depend on each other. He captures the hidden underground networks that allow fungi to help trees exchange nutrients and communicate. “Mushrooms sustain, transform, transport, and heal life,” he explained.

“They are the great recyclers of the forest. Without them, the forest would be filled with dead leaves,” he added.

International Recognition

His exhibition Mushroom Magic, now on display at Xposure 2025, presents fungi in a fresh and striking way. The sharp colors and details of these small organisms—some only 30 cm in size—make them look as breathtaking as fine art.

His talent has even caught the attention of National Geographic, which featured his work in a 10-page spread in its April issue. The magazine also used his mushroom photographs on its cover. “Seeing my photos of Greek forests reach people all over the world is a great success,” he said.

“I feel proud, but I let my work speak for itself,” he added.

A Deeper Message Through Photography

Despite his global recognition, Papatsanis remains deeply connected to nature. He believes people do not always need to travel far to find beauty. “Many wonders exist in our own backyards. We just need to look closer,” he said.

His exhibition at Xposure 2025 features images of various mushrooms, from the famous red-and-white Amanita Muscaria to the rare Dictyophora found in South Korea. He hopes his work will inspire people to care more about nature. “Mushrooms invite us to connect with the natural world with love and respect. I prefer to capture the beauty of my own country,” he said.

For him, photography is more than just taking pictures—it is a tool for change. “A single image can make people care. Let’s use that power to protect nature,” he said.
