A man has been banned by United Airlines after he allegedly urinated on another passenger during a flight. The incident happened last month on UA Flight 189, which was flying from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Manila, Philippines. Four hours into the flight, the man got up from his seat and started urinating on Jerome Gutierrez, who was sleeping in business class at the time.

Gutierrez’s stepdaughter, Nicole Cornell, spoke to the about the incident. She said her stepdad was asleep with his seatbelt on when he suddenly woke up and saw the man standing over him. At first, he thought it was a dream. But after the man finished urinating, Gutierrez realized he was soaked in someone else's urine from his stomach to his feet.
Cornell added that flight attendants told Gutierrez not to approach the man, worried that it could lead to a fight and make things worse. She said she was shocked and disgusted by how United Airlines handled the situation. She believed the airline should have turned the plane around to deal with the issue because it was a health risk.
United Airlines confirmed the incident, calling it a "passenger disturbance" on the flight. The airline said that when the flight landed in Manila, police were waiting to handle the situation. “On December 28, we asked police to meet our flight when it arrived in Manila to address a passenger disturbance. We have banned this passenger,” the airline stated.
This is not the first time something like this has happened. In April 2024, an Indian man traveling from New York to Delhi urinated on another passenger on an American Airlines flight. The man was drunk and urinated on the other passenger during a fight. In November 2022, a drunk man also urinated on an elderly woman in the business class section of an Air India flight. The man was arrested and banned from flying for 30 days.
These incidents show that there are still problems with passenger behavior during flights, especially when alcohol is involved. Airlines have been banning passengers and calling the police, but it’s still unclear what more can be done to stop such events from happening.
