Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has just opened two new bridges to improve traffic between Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street and Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street, heading toward Musaffah. This project is expected to greatly ease traffic and reduce waiting times, especially during busy morning hours, by up to 80%. The new bridges can handle 7,500 vehicles per hour.

The cost of this project was AED 315 million. It includes a new three-lane flyover on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street and a two-lane bridge connecting Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street. There are also paths for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as better service roads and greener spaces to make the area look nicer.
The two new bridges together are 742 meters long and cover over 10,000 square meters of space. They have five lanes and 61 streetlights. The ramps connecting the bridges are 990 meters long, supported by 12 pillars. Around 46,000 square meters of landscaping has also been updated, and over 15,000 cubic meters of concrete were used to build the bridges. The project was completed with over 3 million safe working hours, with no accidents during construction.
This project is the result of collaboration between DMT and the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility). It will benefit people traveling to destinations like Zayed International Airport, Mussafah, and Hudayriyat Island.
Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, the Chairman of DMT, explained that these new bridges are part of a larger effort to improve Abu Dhabi’s road network. The goal is to make travel smoother, faster, and safer for everyone while also making the city more environmentally friendly. He added, “We want to make sure that people in Abu Dhabi can travel easily, and that the city can handle future growth.”
Al Shorafa emphasized that this project is just the beginning of many more to come. “We’re investing heavily to ensure that Abu Dhabi’s infrastructure will meet the needs of a growing city,” he said.
The new bridges will reduce traffic delays and help traffic move more easily, especially in the mornings. The project is also planning for future improvements, like an underpass, to keep up with the city’s growth.
In the end, these new bridges will make traveling through one of Abu Dhabi’s busiest areas much easier and help the city as it continues to expand.
