HMPV Virus Hits India: Bengaluru Reports First Case in 8-Month-Old Baby

Post by: Raman Preet

The world is still recovering from the COVID-19 global when another virus, Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), caught attention. This virus was first noted in China, and now India has reported its first case. An 8-month-old baby in a hospital in Bengaluru has tested positive for HMPV.

The information about this case was shared by a private hospital. The health department clarified that they did not test the sample in their own labs but have no reason to doubt the findings from the private facility.

What is HMPV?
HMPV is a respiratory virus that spreads through close contact with an infected person. It affects people of all ages but is more harmful to small children and older adults. Symptoms of HMPV are similar to the flu and include a runny nose, cough, sore throat, fever, headache, and chills.

The Current Situation in India
Reports say that HMPV is mostly seen in children. Among all flu cases tested, only 0.7% are linked to this virus. The specific strain of the virus in this case has not been confirmed yet.

How India is Preparing
Following reports of HMPV cases in China, the Indian government is taking precautions. Officials are keeping a close watch on the situation and working with the World Health Organization (WHO) for updates. To strengthen the response:

More labs will test for HMPV.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will track HMPV cases throughout the year.
A joint meeting was recently held with experts from WHO, the National Center for Disease Control, and major hospitals like AIIMS, Delhi. Officials discussed the flu season and noted that the rise in cases in China is not unusual.

India is on alert, and steps are being taken to keep people safe. With early detection and proper precautions, the impact of HMPV can be minimized. People should stay informed, avoid close contact with those who are unwell, and follow hygiene practices to stay safe.
