Popular toy company Pop Mart has joined hands with Sony Pictures Entertainment to develop a feature film based on its famous character Labubu. The announcement marks a big step for the company as it moves beyond toys into the global entertainment space.
According to official details, the film is currently in its early stages and will be made using a combination of live-action and CGI. The project aims to bring Labubu’s unique “ugly-cute” personality to audiences worldwide.
The movie will be directed by Paul King, known for films like Paddington, Paddington 2 and Wonka. He will also co-write the script with Steven Levenson, who is known for Dear Evan Hansen.
Labubu was created in 2015 by artist Kasing Lung as part of “The Monsters Trilogy.” He will be involved in the project as an executive producer.
With this collaboration, Pop Mart is aiming to turn Labubu into a global entertainment brand, similar to the success strategy used by The Walt Disney Company. The company plans to expand into films, merchandise, and other entertainment platforms.
The popularity of Labubu has already helped boost Pop Mart’s growth worldwide. The upcoming film is expected to further strengthen its global presence and open new business opportunities through licensing and content expansion.
Currently, Pop Mart is also running a global tour to celebrate 10 years of “The Monsters,” with the latest event being held in Paris.
