Karisma spoke about how special it was to work with Shyam Benegal. She said, “Working with him on Zubeidaa was one of the best experiences of my life. He focused on every little detail. It was at his house that I first tried 'khow suey.'”

She added, “Indian cinema will always be thankful for his genius. I feel so lucky to have worked closely with one of the greatest filmmakers.”

Apart from making films, Benegal also worked on documentaries and TV shows. His famous TV series Bharat Ek Khoj and Samvidhaan are still considered major contributions to Indian television.

Benegal also led the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) from 1980 to 1986.
