‘India’s Nobody’s Property’ – Diljit Dosanjh Invokes Rahat Indori Amid Indore Concert Row

Singer Diljit Dosanjh’s concert in Indore became the center of protests before it even started. On Sunday, the Bajrang Dal group went to the police and asked them to stop the event. They accused Dosanjh of supporting Khalistan and claimed he made anti-national comments during the farmers’ protests. A Bajrang Dal leader said they would not allow such a person to perform in a city like Indore, which they see as sacred. Another leader said their protest was also about stopping drugs and alcohol from being used at concerts, as they believe this goes against Indian culture.

Despite the protests, Diljit’s concert went ahead. During the event, he dedicated his performance to Rahat Indori, a famous poet from Indore who passed away in 2020. He also quoted Indori’s well-known poem, which includes the line:
“Kisi ke baap ka Hindustan thodi hai.”
This means, “Hindustan is not anyone’s property.”

Dosanjh shared more lines from the poem during his performance:
“Agar khilaaf hain hone do, jaan thodi hai,
Ye sab dhua hai asmaan thodi hai.
Sabhi ka khoon hai shaamil yahan ki mitti mein,
Kisi ke baap ka Hindustan thodi hai.”

(If people are against us, let them be; it’s not life at stake. This is just smoke, not the sky at stake. This land has the sacrifices of everyone; Hindustan is not anyone’s property.)

Through these words, Diljit sent a message about unity and the shared history of the land.

At the concert, Dosanjh didn’t directly mention Bajrang Dal, but he responded to claims that tickets for his show were being sold in the black market. He said, “For a long time, people have been saying that my concert tickets are sold in black. How is that my fault? If a ticket costs Rs 10 and someone sells it for Rs 100, how can that be blamed on me as an artist?”

Later in the show, he recited another of Rahat Indori’s poems:
“Mere hujre mein nahin aur kahin par rakh do,
Aasman laaye ho le aao zameen par rakh do,
Ab kahaan dhoondne jaaoge hamaare qaateel,
Aap to qatal ka ilzaam humein par rakh do.”

(Not in my hut, keep it somewhere else. You have brought heaven, so bring it down to earth. Where will you now go to find the killer? You may as well blame me for the murder.)

Through these verses, Dosanjh made it clear he wasn’t afraid of false accusations. He also said, “Media can blame me as much as they want. I don’t fear being blamed or defamed.”

During the concert, Dosanjh spoke about Indian music and how it’s changing. “This is the time for independent music in India,” he said. “Independent artists should work harder. Indian music is growing, and we should be proud. Earlier, foreign artists came here, and their tickets sold for lakhs. Now, tickets for Indian artists are being sold in black. This is what we call ‘vocal for local.’”

Even though there were protests, Dosanjh’s concert was successful. His performance celebrated Indian music and paid tribute to Rahat Indori’s legacy, leaving the audience with a message of unity and pride in their culture.
