The Chinese foreign ministry has reassured citizens and tourists that traveling within the country remains safe, despite a noticeable rise in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases. Officials have referred to the outbreak as an “annual seasonal reoccurrence,” explaining that the increase in cases is a natural result of the winter season. Mao Ning, the spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, stated that respiratory infections tend to peak during colder months and emphasized that the Chinese government is dedicated to protecting the health of both its citizens and international visitors.
Human Metapneumovirus, commonly known as HMPV, is a respiratory virus first identified in 2001 by Dutch researchers who found it in samples taken from children with unexplained respiratory infections. Research has shown that this virus has been around for at least 60 years, and it is now recognized as a common cause of respiratory illnesses worldwide. Despite over two decades of research, scientists have yet to develop a vaccine for HMPV.

Symptoms of HMPV include fever, cough, and cold, and in most cases, these symptoms are mild. However, the virus can occasionally lead to more serious conditions, such as pneumonia, particularly in young children, older adults, and those with weaker immune systems. Currently, there are no specific antiviral drugs or vaccines to treat HMPV. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms, and in severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary. Patients who are critically ill may require oxygen therapy, intravenous fluids, or corticosteroids to stabilize their condition and prevent further complications.
To reduce the risk of infection, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention has advised people to maintain healthy lifestyles, stay in good spirits, wear masks in crowded areas, wash hands frequently, ensure proper ventilation, and use effective cleaning methods to disinfect their surroundings.
In India, concerns about HMPV have led to reassurance from health authorities. Atul Goel, the Director General of Health Services, emphasized that HMPV is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild symptoms similar to a cold or flu. He assured the public that there is no reason to panic, as hospitals are well-prepared to handle an increase in cases. Former Indian Council of Medical Research scientist Dr. Raman Gangakhedkar also noted that HMPV is unlikely to cause severe infections in its current form. He explained that while the virus has been circulating globally for years, it primarily surfaces during the winter months. The mortality rate linked to HMPV is low, and fatal cases are rare, making it less concerning than other respiratory viruses.
Although videos of overcrowded hospitals in China have sparked alarm on social media, health experts maintain that the situation is under control. Both the Chinese and Indian governments have urged people not to overreact, emphasizing that HMPV, while noticeable during the winter season, is manageable with basic precautions and prompt medical care for those with severe symptoms.
