During the event, Sheikh Hamdan placed the first order using the drone delivery system from the platform of the Rochester Institute of Technology-Dubai (RIT-Dubai). The order was delivered successfully, highlighting the efficiency and readiness of the new system. This launch aligns with Dubai's vision to embrace cutting-edge technologies and establish itself as a future-ready city.
Sheikh Hamdan emphasized the importance of developing smart infrastructure and fostering innovation in logistics and air transport. He credited Dubai's achievements to the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Sheikh Hamdan highlighted that Dubai is committed to creating a diversified and flexible digital economy by leveraging advanced technologies. He also stressed the importance of public-private partnerships in driving research and development (R&D), sustainable growth, and smart mobility.
The drone delivery system is part of a larger vision under the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to make Dubai one of the top three global cities for urban economies. Over the years, Dubai has introduced various programs to support smart city solutions, such as the Dubai Programme to Enable Drone Transportation, the Dubai Robotics and Automation Programme, and the Dubai R&D Programme. These initiatives have laid the foundation for transformative projects that aim to double the size of Dubai's economy by 2033.
His Highness noted that technologies like drones, robotics, self-driving systems, and artificial intelligence are no longer concepts of the future but are now an integral part of life in Dubai. He acknowledged Dubai's consistent efforts to advance innovation and implement transformative technologies, including the launch of the UAE Drones for Good Award a decade ago, which encouraged the positive use of drones. Today, this effort has culminated in the operational readiness of a drone delivery system that will raise service quality, enhance living standards, and boost economic growth.
The event was attended by other high-ranking officials, including His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of DIEZ. Sheikh Ahmed highlighted Dubai's global leadership in aviation, logistics, and future mobility. He credited Dubai's achievements to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s forward-thinking vision, which has made the emirate a hub for advanced air transport solutions.
The drone delivery system was developed through a collaborative effort between the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, DIEZ, and the Dubai Future Foundation. This partnership established dedicated air routes within DSO for drone deliveries, ensuring that the system aligns with existing airspace regulations. Over recent months, DSO conducted a series of pilot tests to ensure the safety and efficiency of drone operations. These efforts were supported by Keeta Drone, a leading company in drone delivery technology from China. The system is equipped with advanced algorithms, low-noise propellers, a parachute, and a flight control system to operate smoothly in urban landscapes.
Officials noted that by 2030, drone delivery services will cover 33% of Dubai, reinforcing the city's role as a pioneer in smart mobility. His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Al Zarooni, Executive Chairman of DIEZ, highlighted that DSO has become an internationally recognized hub for smart technologies and future innovation. The drone delivery system marks another step towards improving the quality of life in Dubai and creating a sustainable and efficient transportation ecosystem.
Dr. Yinian Mao, Vice President of Meituan and President of Keeta Drone, expressed excitement about the partnership with Dubai. He emphasized that Dubai provides an ideal environment for businesses to grow and test innovative solutions. The launch at DSO is expected to pave the way for further expansion of drone delivery services across the city and the region.
The Rochester Institute of Technology-Dubai (RIT-Dubai) played a significant role in the project, serving as a key landing point in the drone delivery network. Dr. Yousef Al-Assaf, President of RIT-Dubai, stated that the project enhances academic research and supports local talent development. The collaboration underscores Dubai's focus on integrating education and technology to drive innovation.
This achievement reflects Dubai's commitment to designing and implementing the future. With initiatives like the Dubai Program to Enable Drone Transportation, the city continues to position itself as one of the world’s most future-ready destinations. By integrating advanced technology into daily life, Dubai is creating a smarter, more connected world for its residents and visitors alike.
