Mercedes said that their test and reserve driver, Fred Vesti, will drive their Formula 1 car during the first practice session (called FP1) at the Bahrain Grand Prix this weekend. Fred will take the place of George Russell in this session.
Formula 1 rules say that each driver must give their seat to a new driver (called a rookie) for two practice sessions every year. That is why Fred is getting this chance.

This will be Fred’s third time driving in an F1 practice session. Before this, he drove in Mexico and Abu Dhabi in 2023. In F1, a rookie is a driver who has taken part in two or fewer races.
Another Mercedes driver, Kimi Antonelli, has already done his two rookie sessions this year in Australia and China.
Fred has been working hard in the driving simulator at the Mercedes office in Brackley, UK. Now he will test his skills on the real racing track. He is also racing in the IMSA series in the United States with Cadillac, where he drives in long-distance races.
Fred said, “I am very happy to drive the Mercedes F1 car in Bahrain. I have been practicing a lot on the simulator, and now I want to use that practice on the track. My goal this year is to do my best whenever I get to drive an F1 car. I also want to help the team, George, and Kimi prepare well for the weekend. I thank Mercedes for giving me this chance.”
Mercedes is doing well this season. After three races, Russell and Kimi are in fourth and fifth place in the driver rankings. In the team rankings, Mercedes is in second place with 75 points, just behind McLaren, who have 111 points.
