A large fire broke out early in the morning at a high-rise building under construction near Dubai’s biggest shopping mall, the Dubai Mall. Thick grey smoke filled the sky, covering the heart of the city. The fire occurred at the Address Residences Fountain Views towers, which are being built next to the Dubai Mall and the 63-story Address Downtown Dubai tower. This tower had been severely damaged by a fire on New Year’s Eve in 2015.

Dubai’s government media office said that firefighters quickly brought the fire under control. They added that cooling operations were in progress, and ambulance teams were on the scene. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries.
The fire started at around 6:30 a.m. (02:30 GMT), with flames coming from the podium level of the building. Firefighters sprayed water into the building to control the fire. Every few minutes, loud blasts could be heard from inside the building, likely caused by propane or welding tanks exploding. Despite the explosions, no workers were seen being treated for injuries, and it seemed the fire was mostly contained to the lower floors of the building.
The Fountain Views complex is being developed by Emaar Properties, the same company that built the mall and the hotel damaged in the 2015 fire. The complex has three towers, each 60 stories high, and was expected to be completed by April 2018.
A large number of firefighters were quickly on the scene, and police blocked off nearby roads to keep people safe. Witnesses described seeing huge amounts of black smoke coming from the building, which appeared to be coming from the lower floors. One witness, Anthea Ayache, said, “There are so many fire brigades, so they seem to have gotten on top of it very quickly.”
Fires in tall buildings have become a growing concern in Dubai and other fast-developing cities in the United Arab Emirates. Safety experts have pointed out that a common type of cladding used on buildings can catch fire easily and spread flames quickly.
Thanks to the swift response of firefighters and emergency teams, the situation was quickly brought under control, and no one was seriously hurt.
