At the 9th International Photography Festival (Xposure) in Sharjah, artist and professor Ioannis Galanopoulos Papavasileiou shared a special way of looking at the human body. His talk, Internal Landscapes…Tales from the Intensive Care, was about how medical pictures help us understand life, health, and aging. He showed how these images are everywhere in today’s world and why they are important.

Papavasileiou is an art professor at Zayed University in the UAE. He is known for mixing art and science to make people think deeply. In his latest work, he created “fake MRI” images. These pictures looked like real medical scans, showing organs, blood vessels, and soft tissues. He used them to explore how the body changes with time and how people see health and illness.
His love for this kind of art came from his own life. He lost both parents when he was young, and he remembered seeing a lot of X-ray images. Later, when he became a father, he saw ultrasound pictures of his children before they were born. These memories made him curious about how medical pictures tell stories of life and change.
In his talk, he explained how he made these images. Since he has a strong background in photography, he knows how to control light and angles in pictures. He also used computer tools like Photoshop to add effects such as motion blur and blending. This helped him create pictures that looked like real medical scans but were made for art.
His goal was to help people see medical images in a new way. “I wanted to understand medical pictures better and learn how they affect our thinking. These pictures are not real, but they can make people feel something and start a conversation,” he said.
Through Internal Landscapes, he wanted people to think about how these pictures change the way we see our own bodies. He also talked about how photography and new technology can shape our future and how we understand health.
His talk made the audience think about how medical pictures are part of daily life. By mixing photography with science, Papavasileiou showed that the inside of the human body is not just a medical subject—it can also be art.
