Ursula von der Leyen, who is in charge of the European Commission, said this deal gives hope to the people in the region, who have been suffering for a long time. She also said both sides must follow the agreement to help bring peace and stability.
Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign affairs leader, said this deal is a big step to stop the fighting.
Qatar said that Israel and Hamas agreed to stop fighting. According to the deal, Hamas will release 33 hostages in the first phase, which will last for six weeks. In return, Israel will free Palestinian prisoners. The first phase of the deal will start on Sunday, January 19, and the next parts will be shared later.
This deal could end the 15-month war that started when Hamas attacked Israel in October 2023.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that some parts of the deal still need to be fixed, but he hopes everything will be ready soon. The deal will stop the fighting and allow both sides to exchange hostages and prisoners.
Hamas took 251 people as hostages in October 2023. They still hold 94 hostages, but Israel thinks only 60 of them are still alive. In return, Israel will release about 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, some of whom have been in jail for many years.
People all over the world are hoping this deal will bring peace and stop the fighting in Gaza.
