The airline that started flying to Madagascar in September 2024 is Emirates, which announced an increase in its flight schedule to the island. Emirates will fly six times a week starting April 2, 2025, instead of four. The decision shows that the airline supports Madagascar's tourism growth by making it easier for visitors to explore the island and by promoting it to the rest of the world.
The announcement was done in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, during a press event. Those present included representatives from the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Tourism, and Emirates. According to the airline, the rationale behind more flights stemmed from increasing demand for travel between Antananarivo and Dubai.
Since the starts of flights last year, the route has experienced high demand, and the current flights are nearly at full capacity. The additional flights will help Madagascar attract more tourists, provide more travel options, and bring greater convenience for passengers traveling to and from this beautiful Indian Ocean destination.
Speaking at the event, Essa Sulaiman Ahmad, Emirates' Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations for West Asia and the Indian Ocean, welcomed the increase in frequency. He stated that the additional flights would help improve connectivity and contribute to Madagascar's economy through increased leisure and business travel. The increased flight schedule will also bring more cargo capacities, which enables up to 20 tonnes of goods to be transported per flight, thus developing trade ties between Madagascar and the UAE.
Noting that this growth in Madagascar's tourism is bound to attract more local business, Ahmad also thanked the government for its cooperation and said, "Emirates is committed to helping Madagascar attain its development objectives.".
The seasonal travel demand had already seen Emirates add a temporary fifth flight per week. The six flights change is a major step forward and shows that the airline believes in Madagascar as an important destination. Ahmad also mentioned the efforts of Emirates in promoting the island across its global network, highlighting the unique attractions and natural beauty to encourage more visitors.
The new schedule will operate every day except Monday, and tickets are already available for booking on the Emirates website, the Emirates app, and through travel agents. Holiday packages can also be booked through Emirates Holidays and other travel companies worldwide.
During the event, Madagascar's Minister of Transport, Dr. Manambahoaka Valéry F. Ramonjavelo, said he is in full support of the increased flights. He said it remains an important step towards creating stronger air connection between Madagascar and the UAE. "This will be a key boost in our aim to reach more than a flight per day within the near future," he said.
The Minister of Tourism of Madagascar, Viviane Dewa, also commended Emirates for reviving the tourism sector in the country. She stated that connecting Madagascar to more than 140 destinations has opened new opportunities to promote the island globally. With the aim of welcoming one million tourists by 2028, she said that improving air connectivity through partnerships with major airlines like Emirates is crucial to achieving this milestone.
Over the past year, Emirates has actively supported Madagascar's tourism goals by promoting the island as a must-visit destination. The airline has organized familiarization trips for top travel agents to showcase Madagascar's attractions, which include three UNESCO World Heritage Sites and remarkable biodiversity.
In the last couple of months, the demand for traveling to Madagascar has been extremely high from places like the UAE, Sri Lanka, France, UK, China, Japan, Spain, and Italy. On the other hand, tourists from Madagascar have been going to destinations such as Dubai, Seychelles, France, India, and Japan.
With the increased flights, Emirates is looking to enhance its relationship with Madagascar while also promoting the country's tourism and trade. More flights and cargo capacity will enable the airline to play a greater role in the growth and development of the island.
