Dubai teen charged after kickboxing bout leaves student in coma.

A friendly kickboxing match between two schoolmates in Dubai's JBR area took a devastating turn when a 17-year-old boy from the USA ended up in a coma after being kicked in the jaw by his 16-year-old British schoolmate. The incident, which occurred on a sandy pitch around 9:30 PM on November 4 last year, has sparked serious concerns about the safety of unsupervised sporting activities among youth.

During the match, neither of the boys wore protective headgear. Despite the victim winning the initial four rounds, the situation drastically changed in the fifth round when the defendant's kick rendered him unconscious.

Witnesses, including a Canadian friend of both students, rushed to the victim's aid upon seeing him unconscious. He regained consciousness briefly but began vomiting, prompting his friends to transport him to a nearby house. Recognizing the severity of the situation, they called for an ambulance, which rushed the victim to Rashid Hospital.

At the hospital, the victim underwent emergency surgery to treat an acute subdural hematoma, a serious condition characterized by bleeding within the skull but outside the brain. He remained in a coma for several days before finally being discharged on December 15.

Meanwhile, the defendant, who has been charged with physical assault, spent a week detained in a juvenile center before being released upon surrendering his passport. Despite denying the charges, he maintained that the kickboxing match was a friendly activity between schoolmates.

Representing the defendant, lawyer Awatif Shoqi emphasized the absence of malice or intent to harm in her client's actions, portraying the incident as a tragic accident among friends. She argued that since the victim was a professional kickboxer who initiated the match, he bore responsibility for his injury.

The case has now moved to Dubai Juveniles Misdemeanor Court, where the defendant reiterated his regret for the incident and maintained that he did not intend to harm his friend. The defense highlighted the defendant's immediate concern for the victim's well-being as evidence of his good faith during the match.

Despite the legal proceedings, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the potential risks associated with unsupervised sports activities among youth and underscores the importance of safety precautions and responsible conduct, even in friendly competitions.
